  3. Poker Stats – You Should Track these!

Mastering online poker involves a lot of practice and using the right tools at the right time. Poker stats are those statistics about your opponents that give you an idea on his style of play. Different poker software offers a large number of statistics. However, not all statistics are important and necessary. Today, we will talk about the few main poker stats which you can track with a good poker stats tracker to know about your opponent and play accordingly.

Poker Stats

Using poker HUDs and other software is essential to gather information about your opponents. If you’re a newbie, you don’t want to gather all those statistics and jumble them up on your display to further confuse yourself in tight games.  As a rookie player, you should just stick with the basics and try to find out if your opponent is an aggressive player or a moderate defensive player playing safe hands.

Important Poker Stats

If you are new to online poker, it must be a challenge to use different poker software with your table.  Essentially, you will need three main poker stats of your opponents to judge their gameplay. These include the  Preflop raise (PFR), voluntary Put $ in Pot (VPIP), and Postflop Aggression Frequency (Agg).  These statistics are enough to know your opponent’s style of play. However, more statistics don’t hurt at all; you may add more statistics on your HUD once you are used to with your tracker.

Preflop Raise (PFR)

This statistic indicates the number of times you have raised before seeing the flop. The higher the value, the more aggressive a player is, and vice versa.  A good poker practice is to have a high PFR.

Voluntary Put $ in Pot (VPIP)

This statistic indicates how many times you voluntarily pay for a hand before seeing a flop. In other words, it indicates how many times a player bets, raises, or calls. The lower the number, the tighter the player is.

Postflop Aggression Frequency (Agg)

This stat is an indicator of aggression of a player in postflop. The higher the Agg, the more aggressive a player is. This stat is always read with reference to VPIP as it depends on the number of flops.

How to Track Poker Stats

In the earlier days of online poker, players who wanted to track their poker stats would use Office tools such as Excel. This was a long, hectic routine to manually enter your daily statistics and generate reports afterward.  However, now different types of poker stats trackers have replaced the Excel and provide much better report without any needs of manual inputs.  The poker tracker breaks down your hand history as well as that of your opponents into simple graphs and numbers. This helps you track your performance easily and also understand the common strategies that your opponent adopts while playing different hands.
