Get Minecraft Running On A Raspberry Pi Installing Raspbian on your Raspberry Pi means you'll find Minecraft Pi in the Games section. Minecraft Pi is a bare-bones version of the popular survival game designed to help teach users various programming languages. It's certainly entertaining but it's not the Minecraft game we love. Like everything else Raspberry Pi, a group of gamers have found out how to install the full version of Minecraft on your Raspberry Pi 2 or 3. Like everything else on the Raspberry Pi, there's a lot of editing and playing with files and Terminal commands. It is recommended to be patient and go through each step. Be aware that prior to you dive in there are some important things you need to be aware of: You'll require your Mojang account login information along with your Minecraft username. You will require a paid Minecraft license. Minecraft.net has a place to purchase one. This guide is only applicable to Minecraft 1.8.9. However, with a small tweak you can run the latest version, currently 1.9.4 (more on this later). Playing Minecraft on a $35 computer isn't going to be the smoothest experience, but it's certainly playable. Spend an hour putting everything together. I recommend opening this guide in your Raspberry Pi's browser and then the Terminal window right next to it. There are some modified log files stored in Dropbox accounts you'll need to download, and I'd hate to publish the commands here only to have the links changed at a later day. The procedure is easy it requires you to copy and paste Terminal commands from your browser, pasting them into the command line. After you've entered each command, hit the Enter key on the keyboard. Your Pi will take care of the rest. Tips to make the process as smooth as it can be Here are some tips I came up with to make the process go as smoothly as it can: Raspberry Pi 3 users are exempt from step 1. You are currently unable to overclock the Pi 3. Besides, the Pi 3 is actually faster out of the box than the suggested overclock speed of the Pi 2. After you have completed Step 4, press the Arrow keys to highlight Advanced options. MINECRAFT PROFILES Then, highlight GL Options, select Enable. I was a little confused by Step 7 of the guideline where it says to click on "edit profile," You actually need to click on Profile Editor, then double-click on the first (and only) listing. Under Version Selection click on the drop-down next to Use version and select the appropriate build number. Remember, the default setting is 1.8.9. This version is recommended for now. We will change it once everything is working. Step 10 tells you to edit the "run.sh" file without further instructions. Open the Minecraft folder inside your Pi directory, right-click on the run.sh file and select Text Editor. There are two ways to launch Minecraft. The guide will show you how to use "./run.sh" in Terminal to launch Minecraft. However, prior to entering the command you'll need to type "cd Minecraft" into a Terminal window. Another option is to open the Minecraft folder and double-click the run.sh file. Then, click "Execute." Run the latest version Alright So once you've got everything working you can begin playing with the installation. To upgrade to the most recent Minecraft version, you will need to relaunch Minecraft.jar. Enter the cd Minecraft in a terminal window Next, enter: java -jar Minecraft.jar Click on Profile Editor to change the version number to 1.9.4 or the latest version. Save your changes and click on the Play button, forcing Minecraft to download the latest version. Then then, open the Minecraft folder. To avoid any issues if you make a mistake, create a backup of the run.sh file. Change the name to something that is on the lines of "runcopy.sh". With a copy safely tucked away open the run.sh file by right-clicking it and selecting Text Editor. Press Ctrl-F on your keyboard and then type 1.8.9 in the text field. There should be at least two instances. Each one should be replaced with the current Minecraft version (this should be the same version number you selected in step 3). Save the file and restart your Raspberry Pi. Start Minecraft like you normally and enjoy.
